{"id":28337,"date":"2026-05-17T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/?p=28337"},"modified":"2026-05-16T00:34:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T04:34:28","slug":"11-11-2013-awr-contemplation-activism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/?p=28337","title":{"rendered":"11.10.2013 AWR: Contemplation &amp; Activism"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1537.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1537.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28339\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Rouletters gathered together once again to contemplate, but mostly to protest.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1538.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1538.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28341\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Magic Jack ATX<\/strong> kicked off the event, fresh from protesting, to call out for the power of Mother Nature, women, immigrants and the horrors of traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1539.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1539.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28343\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">For his protest poem about the plight of immigrants, he turned his back to the audience so they could better visualize an immigrant.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1540.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1540.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28344\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Sarah Kennon<\/strong>, inspired by a \u201cdouchy song\u201d (her description) where a man thinks he doesn\u2019t have to ask for consent before having sex with a woman, wrote about the motivations and machinations of the American dream.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1541.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1541.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28345\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Sangye O\u2019Mara<\/strong> came complete with a visual aid pink designer purse that she carried during an interview that turned into her protest against how Americans institutionalize the elderly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Joyce Feilke<\/strong> (not pictured) made her Roulette debut with a powerful educational protest essay equating the system of standardized testing in public school with slavery. A student in the audience screamed, \u201cPreach!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1542.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"284\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1542.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1542.png 284w, https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1542-142x300.png 142w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/austinwritersroulette.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/carol-ramsey.jpg\"><\/a>Another Rouletter, <strong>Carol Ramsey<\/strong>, made her roulette debut, sharing her teaching experiences in Lithuania, where students did not feel comfortable answering certain questions about authority.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1543.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mathdreads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-1543.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28348\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/austinwritersroulette.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/me-reading.jpg\"><\/a><br><strong>Teresa Y. Roberson<\/strong> first chanted, \u201cEducation is a right; not just for the rich and white!\u201d before reading about a current racist practice of holding predominantly low-income Latino students who was only 4\u20198\u2033, but people chose to look up to her because of the power of her words and the strength of her character<a href=\"https:\/\/austinwritersroulette.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/sangye.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/austinwritersroulette.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/sarah.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/austinwritersroulette.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/jacks-back.jpg\"><\/a><a
