Big Deck Reading

1-garden

I didn’t quite know what to expect when I agreed to perform at a backyard, big deck reading. Yet, this garden enticed me to take a second look. Not only were the raised vegetation beds growing plants, but it also served as makeshift seating.

2-sound-system

One end of the deck housed the sound equipment and DJ.

3-big-deck

I stood in the garden to take in the full effect of the deck, which the organizer/homeowner herself had built.  Periodically, she’d prompt the audience to say with her, “My deck is bigger than yours!”

4-pasteries

Another writer brought some designer pastries, where yours truly de-baconed one of a pastry’s two pieces. These treats were so huge, they had to be cut into bitesize pieces to be shared with the rest of the audience.

5-toilet-sign

Before the show, I used the bathroom. Normally an unremarkable event, but I loved the sign above the toilet paper roll, which reminded me of another toilet sign I witnessed at a bar/restaurant in Cuzco, Peru.

6-me-reading

The audio dynamics alarmed me when I spoke in the mic. I then understood why the first performer had stepped back and had projected his voice even more. I toughed it out and read the vibrator excerpt from my first novel, Tribe of One.

7-me-reading

Followed by reading an excerpt from my second novel, The Adventures of Infinity & Negativa. I couldn’t tell until after the fact that the mostly millennial audience had enjoyed my reading or not. Most commented on the first excerpt.

Since I was the third reader to perform out of five, the show broke for a 15-minute intermission. Of course I took the opportunity to travel throughout the crowd, handing out business cards and inviting people to check out the roulette. Although the next roulette was the following day, no one from the big deck event, as far as I know, came out. Nonetheless, they have a few more opportunities remaining in 2016 to do so.

New Dreams and Visions

As a quintessential Virgo, I never stop planning ahead. The close of any year usually brings the global introspection of what we want to do for the new year. People make frivolous resolutions to start exercising more, eating healthier, perhaps even looking for a new job, love or something more unconventional.

As for me, one of the goals that I had for 2012 after filing my taxes was becoming a millionaire.  Since then, I discovered several different ways not to make a profit. Nonetheless, I feel successful because I started my own event, The Austin Writers Roulette. One of the many things that I learned in the process was how to apply my organizational and analysis skills to a new situation. I fumbled in the beginning with all the details of putting together a show. What I came up with was a terrific line up that needed better promotion and a bigger audience to appreciate the poets and spoken word artists who were gathering together once a month to read their theme-based works.

Promoting in such a happening town such as Austin is a challenge. There’s definitely a huge crowd of people who are interested in poetry and spoken word, but those same people are also interested in many other things as well. I’ve felt in direct competition with other venues that have much bigger PR budgets and more people whose full-time jobs were to promote their venue.

One resolution I made two months before the New Year season of resolution-making was to move the roulette to a more viable location, one that had a stage, lights, chairs, tables, a kick-ass friendly and supportive staff, and an impressive PR campaign.   I found all the preceding at Strange Brew.

Once I landed a place in their schedule, Carmencita, my right arm, updated our 2013 flyers to reflect their address and I got 2500 postcard sized flyers printed up and started enthusiastically passing them out. So many people claim to love that coffee shop/cyber cafe and to live “just down the street” from it. I’m no longer naive to believe that just because someone says that they’re going to come to a show, they’ll actually do it, but at least they already know where the place is!

Another change that I’ve already put into action is to contact certain artists with a personal email in addition to the all call for submissions. Now that I’ve gotten to know certain artists and they have performed on the roulette a time or two, I’m slowly building a nucleus of artists whose work is good quality and varied in their approach to the theme.

I’m going to continue going to at other venues at least once a week in order to promote, recruit and possibly participate. Truthfully, I need to attend more than once a week, but in reality, as long as I have a full-time job, going once a week will be as much as I can handle when not on vacation.

In the long term, I’ll carry over my resolution to become a millionaire. I’m quite conscience about how much money I’m spending and plan to save as much as I can. I still maintain that money can buy happiness with the right set of priorities. I plan to be much happier in my life as I transition into being a full-time artist.

Staycation 2012

The one adult thing I had planned to do during this spring break was file my taxes. The rest of the time, I’d indulge my creative passions: writing, dancing, painting, training capoeira,  swimming and doing yoga. The last three things may not seem like artistic pursuits, but without the stress from the daily workplace grind, I found myself exploring different boundaries within the exercise disciplines, from slightly altering the way I kick when doing the butterfly stroke to modifying my grip when I’m practicing bikram yoga. Somehow, like magic, my capoeira capabilities change as both my strength and flexibility improves with the other two disciplines.

I worked on my taxes a little Monday through Friday, with the final blitz of “getting her done” on Friday.  I’m glad I took my time since this was my first time to file taxes on my own as a small business owner rather than returning to a professional tax preparer. I learned so many things, including that, by sheer luck, I’m using the “correct” credit card for my business expenses. I learned on Tuesday that my business credit card provides me with a year-end summary, breaking down my expenses into different categories and organizing the information into several graphic styles. That just pleased my little Virgo heart to no end!

I made four birthday cards for the family members who were born in April. I still need to create more to get better at card-making, but at least I got them all completed and mailed off while still on vacation. I had the brilliant idea to make all the birthday cards for my family and mail them out in January…that way they can open them on their actual birthday and I could cross that off my list in one fell swoop.  One of my sisters laughed at me, but I’m seriously thinking about doing that for 2013.

I completed 1 1/2 mini paintings.  I can already tell that both of them will eventually be cut up further and in some shape or form help decorate a future greeting card. I’m not saying they’re ugly, but cutting out the flaws really helped my last batch of paintings.

I trained capoeira on my normal days, but at least I had more energy for it. I’ve even been practicing a traditional Brazilian dance called afoxe.  It derives from a Yoruba religious practice,, which in turn became candomble in Brazil, but we’re dancing a secular version. As a matter of fact, I’ve found myself in the surprising role of choreographer, or should I say “dance modifier”?  I simply modified funga, which is a West African welcoming dance. I’m impressed that I still remember the sequence.  I’m so happy that of all the things I’ve learned and have forgotten, I still remember that one dance, which was the first West African choreography I’d learned.

This is all in an effort to help out the fundraiser that we’re hosting at the Capoeira Evolucao studio next Saturday. In addition to dancing, I’ll have Tribe of One available since my capoeira teacher is allowing me to sell it in exchange for a comission to the studio. I excitedly emailed the information to my professional writers’ association. I advertised it as a “Brazilian style book signing” and included the event flyer. They were impressed at the packaging of the event. One writer showed me her date book where she’d penciled me into her schedule.

Speaking of writing, after Tuesday’s monthly writing meeting, I was inspired to put a gag on my inner critic and let my imagination and fingers fly.  I had been wondering how all these professional writers could generate pages of material on a somewhat daily basis.  Imagine my surprise when I heard writer after writer admit that the first draft is SHIT! Some confessed to having no dialogue while others stated that their first draft was almost exclusively dialogue with no tags, emotions or background setting.

The next morning, I raced through incorporating a huge portion of the notes I’d gathered when I was in Utila to research my story. I had the ability to do that all along, I just hadn’t freed myself from pursuit of perfection. Another thing that totally makes sense to me now is why pour so much time and energy into a particular sentence, paragraph or chapter for the first draft when I may end up completely changing it or cutting it altogether?

And of course, I’ve managed to grow the overall height of my ever-rotating stack of books.  Can’t say that I’ve read more than I’d planned to since I still waited until bedtime to read. I truly think having a hammock on my balcony would help that. I still love how nearly every book has a tangential association with every other book.  Some of the connections are intentional. Others are uncanny coincidences that I dreamily think the universe wanted me to read.

Despite the fact that I’ve done yoga about 7 times during this break, I’ve come down with the sniffles, which I’m tempted to dismiss as allergies flaring up again. Yet, part of me thinks that it’s psychosomatic. I know this is the last day of vacation and my body’s reacting like this. One of my friends took pity on me and gave me a variety of herbal teas to help me through it.

Every little bit helps.  Just like last night, when I returned from the matinee milonga, I completed the photo gallery of celebrities to base my comic strip characters on and emailed the file to my sister. She’s going to illustrate for me. I’m so excited for this collaboration. I’ll have to figure out how to schedule writing this script into my already busy schedule.  I already know that it cannot be a daily pursuit, but I’ve got to make it a weekly thing.

Come what may tomorrow, I’ve truly enjoyed my break and the rest of the school year will rush into summer break.  Amen!

Summer Vacation’s Here!

My last day at school was this past Thursday and despite sitting through a “never-ending” full faculty meeting (something which hardly ever happens, given the size of our faculty), I managed to complete my checkout process after the meeting by 10:30.  And just to show that I cannot stop being a teacher “cold turkey,” I’d already planned a full day for myself: swimming, grocery shopping, dancing.

My first postschool activity was somewhat thwarted since the branch of the gym where I normally swim only cleans the pool on Thursdays from 11 to 1.  There was no way I was going to just hangout until after 1; so I went to another branch of the gym.  Not my favorite location since there always seems to be robberies in the locker room, it has a smaller swimming pool and the facilities are not as clean.  But I figured, what the hell, at least there’s a grocery store close by so I can kill two birds with one stone.

I ended up being the nearly killed bird! Even though the water looked a tad cloudy, I swam my usual 21 laps (3 sets of 7 different strokes) and as soon as I’d finished getting dressed, I had a sore throat.  I was mildly concerned since I had a reading at BookWoman on Friday.  The fantastic thing was I didn’t have to strain my voice doing something like teaching a full day of classes, for example.

I happily shopped at the closest grocery store to that gym, which I normally don’t go to, but the biggest treat was the vast selection of good chocolate.  I found one of my favorites: dark chocolate with chilies!  I got everything else on my list and started to feel a little more run down.

By the time I got home, my throat was dry and throbbing, prompting me to make my usual headcold/sorethroat remedy: I boiled fresh ginger and cloves, let it stew and then strained it into a mug of pure, local honey with freshly squeezed lime juice.  The heat from both the temperature and the ginger made my throat feel instantly better.  Despite taking a nap, I still felt too run down to go out dancing, but since I had a good movie on DVD to watch, I called it a night.

On Friday, I still felt sick, but figured bikram yoga would make me feel better.  The sore throat was nearly gone, but my new issue was “progressive diarrhea.” I don’t know what the technical term for this brand of diarrhea was, but everytime I ate anything, I had to go soon after.  I still blamed the cloudy pool water since inevitably, I swallow a bit of the pool water anytime I swim.  As far as oral-fecal contamination is concerned, just a drop will do you in; so when I made myself lunch, I also prepared a margarita (fresh lime and tangelo juices, cream of coconut and two shots of tequila shaken over ice and strained) since I believe in the healing powers of tequila when it comes to digestive issues.

I took about an hour long nap, then got myself together to trek to BookWoman.  The best part about that dreadful trip north on I-35 was that UT was out for the summer and I zipped and made it to BookWoman quite early.  I set up my sound equipment, help set up chairs and chatted a bit with some customers who happen to be there.

The reading went well, considering how drained I felt.  There’s something about performing that makes me rise to the occasion.  Afterwards, a small group of us went to a Cuban restaurant.  Although I was invited to go downtown, I wanted to take my equipment home.  I also knew that I once I got home, I was in for the night.  I slept so soundly that I know it was the right call.

I’m glad that my Saturday morning volunteer opportunity had fallen through since I just had a luxurious time painting the whole morning before being picked up by a friend later that day to listen to 5 bands play at a nearby “pool party” sponored at an apartment complex.  Although some of the bands were good and others could definitely change their names to “Constant Headache,” I enjoyed the extended opportunity to people watch.  I’d worn my bathing suit, but only sat on the edge, dangling my lower legs in.

I was just getting over a pool related illness.  I knew I’d surely get something with all those little kids and increasingly drunk adults in the pool! Besides, I was busy studying everyone in order to use it in my current book.  The more I can observe real, live people, the easier I can make my fictional characters seem real.

So tonight, 4 days after being on vacation, I’m finally going out dancing!  I’ve even got two places lined up just in case the first one, which is a new venue for me, turns out to be a dud.  I love vacation schedules.

Reading @ BookWoman Fri, June 3rd 7 to 8:30

Single, sexy, powerful women unite. In new author Teresa Y. Roberson’s outrageously naughty debut, Tribe of One, the band gets together to sing a common refrain. Yes, where have all the good men gone? For anyone who loves a saucy and daring tale of female espionage and uncanny spy tactics with great sex scenes, this is a book that shows how one woman exacted a smart model to find Mr. Right only to discover that romantic happiness cannot be reduced to a formula.

Join Teresa to hear excerpts from her book along with other make-you-want-to-blush poetry and short stories.

Cupid’s Naughty Secrets

I’ll be the first to confess: I nearly spent what I pay in rent on audio equipment since Esquina Tango does not have a microphone for me to use for my first reading/book signing event on Sunday, Feb. 13th, 7 to 9 pm.  Some would be in a post buyer’s panic over the expense, but I know that I have to invest in my own dreams if I expect anyone else to follow suit. As a matter of fact, it pleases my little Virgo-controlling heart to do as much as I can to make my first time as painless as possible. Plus, now that I have my own microphone, I’m very motivated to set up other readings/book signings.

On another note…for about two weeks, I tried converting the pdf of “Letters from Egypt” to a word document.  The finished “word” document wouldn’t copy and paste into my blog, but the document would not cooperate.  Finally, I just uploaded the pdf itself although it wasn’t the best quality and I feared that someone would get a headache attempting to read it for a long period of time.  Not one week after I posted it, Egyptians started clamoring for Mubarak to step down.  I must admit, I’m borderline superstitious enough to believe that the difficulty in converting and uploading my “Letters from Egypt” was a sign of exciting times to come now in Egypt!  The dull alternative is simply to believe that those two things are merely a coinicidence.

Inaugural Post

Here’s the day I’ve been waiting for: I’m finally writing my first post because my busybody, perfectionist self is finally satisfied that my blog is good enough to start inviting people to view it.  Plus, I’m in the mist of putting together my first reading/book signing at Esquina Tango on Feb. 13th, which is not as far away as it seems.  This has been an exciting process that actually started seven years ago when I dreamed of the first line of Tribe of One: “Life would be so much easier if I was not a gay white man trapped in a black woman’s body.” I woke up and immediately wrote that line down.  Now, I’m a self-published author, launched a blog and about to have my first one-woman show to promote my writing.

Not only did I have a tremendous sense of accomplishment seeing my book in print, but felt that 2011 would be a year with many different opportunities. One of the best things about living through the uncertain financial times of a recession is that I am motivated to pursue different interests that I may not have previously done.  I figured out a few months ago that I had all the resources I needed to be happy and successful since I am not a one-trick pony!  When the situation changes, I have enough varied interests, skills and hobbies to nurture, adapt and eventually land solidly on my feet.
